Pro Tools 9 released....and it's totally native!
Pro Tools 9 ReleasedWow that is certainly going to make things interesting! Anyone with any soundcard can now use Pro Tools! I am not sure what Avid have in mind, but it does mean that the competition is now on. I can see that it will potentially have a massive effect on some of the DAW's with a smaller user base, such as Digital Performer, but to be honest, all the 'new' features that have been added only take it to where it should have been years ago. I mean come on, how can Avid have the audacity to charge for extra for an mp3 encoder? or a SMPTE timeline....let alone ADC (automatic delay compensation).I think this means interesting times ahead, which could also mean that a number of users will switch to the supposed god of all DAWs only to find that they don't like it and switch back. Alternatively, this also may mean a more open playing field, where choice and features will be taken into account rather than the usual 'Pro Tools is the standard'.I am in two minds, I think (and this is my own opinion) that Logic works for me when composing (midi), but totally sucks for post production sound editing. I think that Digital Performer is a a great all round package, with excellent audio editing (very similar to Pro Tools), but is a bit clunky (IMHO) and seems to be a bit of a memory hog, plus does not come with a wealth of plugins such as Logic (some may see this as a good thing!). I really love Samplitude when it comes to audio editing (object based editing is simply amazing), but I had reliability issues when using it on the PC, plus after falling off the upgrade ladder it is just too expensive, but the plugins are amazing, but ultimately I feel it doesn't lend itself well to composition. So what about Pro Tools.....well I haven't tried 9 yet, but it is pretty good (IMHO) at audio editing (well it is the standard), but i don't like the way it handles fades, and I am personally yet to be convinced at it's midi abilities. So for myself currently, I am sticking with Logic as my main music tool, with the hope that one day audio editing will be 'logical' and DP for post production sound as it is cool!Maybe now Pro Tools has been released into the wild that there will be one tool to rule them all in the future!PeaceNeil
